As October arrives with a cold breeze, many Filipinos prepare for one of the country’s most meaningful traditions. It is a solemn month for those who will return to their hometowns to reunite with their families, visit cemeteries, and honor loved ones who crossed the other side. What begins as the joy of reuniting turns into a silent moment of reflection among candlelit headstones, flowers, and prayers.
This is Undas, a period when Filipinos clean up the graves, light candles, and offer food to the departed. It begins on the 31st day of October, although cemeteries already get crowded before that. It continues throughout the week until it ends on the 2nd day of November, All Souls’ Day.
